About Devon
Assemblyman Devon Mathis represents California’s 33rd Assembly District, encompassing Kings County and portions of Fresno and Tulare County.
The middle child of six, Mathis was born into humble beginnings and raised in the heart of California’s San Joaquin Valley. After high school, he joined the Army National Guard, serving as Sergeant for nearly ten years, with two combat tours in Iraq. In 2008, during his 2nd tour in Iraq, he sustained major injuries from an IED roadside bomb attack, for which he received a Purple Heart.
After returning home as a decorated war hero, Mathis went through the VA system, where he persevered and decided to commit his life to public service. In 2009, Mathis started college at Porterville City College; he then transferred to Fresno State, where he earned a BA in Public Administration. Devon graduated with a Master’s in Strategic Public Relations from George Washington University.
In 2014, when the 26th Assembly District seat opened up, Mathis decided to pursue public office. As the underdog, he ran a grassroots campaign, knocking on thousands of doors and taking full advantage of his social media skills. He won both the primary and general elections in 2014, becoming the 1st millennial combat veteran with a Purple Heart elected to state legislature in the country.
In 2018, Assemblyman Mathis was appointed to the leadership position of Republican Whip. His focus has been squarely on people, not politics: helping to bring and protect good-paying jobs, making sure there is enough water for residents and farming, and keeping our local hospitals open. He is committed to being a voice of reason and ensuring the people of his district are heard by the Sacramento elite.
Mathis is the Vice-Chair of the Agriculture Committee. Mathis also serves on the Appropriations Committee, Governmental Organization Committee, Natural Resources Committee, and the Military and Veterans Affairs Committee. Mathis is currently the Chief Operations Officer of the CA Assembly Republican Caucus. Mathis also was appointed to the Joint Committee on Fairs Allocation and Classification and the Governor’s Military Council (2020-2022).
The Mathis family resides in Porterville.
